Orphan Care Ministry
Our Mission: South Sound Church Orphan Care Ministry is dedicated to being an advocate for children in distress and their families.
We exist to show the love of Christ to every child in need and live out James 1:27 which reads, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Our mission is to help remove barriers to adoption and support those families that have chosen to care for orphans through foster care and adoption.
Our Vision: We desire for every orphan and child in distress a loving Christian home to call their own. Our hope is that every child in the foster system and orphan around the world would be adopted and experience the love and redemption of Christ as modeled by a loving Christian family.
Financial Assistance for Adoption Expenses:
One of our goals is to help remove barriers to adoption. One of the largest of these barriers can be financial. That’s why we started a fund to offer zero interest short-term loans to qualifying families to help them cover some of the up-front costs of adoption such as attorney fees and agency fees. Often families don’t have the thousands of dollars needed to cover these expenses at the time when they are needing to be paid. These expenses are typically reimbursed by the State of Washington in a foster-to-adopt situation, or through federal tax credits if adopting through a private agency. The families borrowing the funds agree to pay their loan back when they are reimbursed, freeing those funds up again for another family. Please consider being a monthly supporter of our ministry so we will be able to help more families in this way. You can donate by writing “Orphan Care” on the memo line of your check & dropping it in the offering basket on Sundays, mailing it to the church, or by visiting ourOnline Giving page right here on our website. Make your donation designating the funds to the "Orphan Care Ministry".
Monthly Adoption/Foster Family Support Group and Dinner
Working with Youth For Christ (YFC), we started a monthly support group open to foster and adoptive families in our community. It does not matter if you are a foster family licensed through a private agency like Olive Crest or YFC, or if you are licensed through Washington State DSHS . . . or if you have adopted domestically or internationally . . . all are welcome. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month, 6pm here at the church. We offer a hot meal to the families and time for everyone to visit, and for new friendships to grow. The children then go to child care and the parents get time sharing their struggles and their wins, time to pray together and support each other. Periodically, we watch a training video and foster families can count that time toward their continuing education requirements to maintain their foster licenses.

Thurston Talk Article on Foster Parents Barbara and Bill McGregor
Barbara and Bill McGregor of Olympia have been foster parents for over 35 years. When asked how many children have come through their doors, Barbara chuckles. “I couldn’t even begin to count, hundreds and hundreds.” Recalling their first placement, the McGregors were in charge of twin, two-year-old boys. “The gal at the placement desk said, ‘I figured if you could do that, you could do anything.’ She was right,” Barbara explains.
