Be the Church - Compassion in Action

The Lynnwood Food Bank

The Lynnwood Food Bank started as a Joseph’s Closet in the Lynnwood Church of the Nazarene (now known as Silver Creek Family Church). We have been providing food supplements to the poor in Lynnwood for over 28 years. In 1982 we became a member of the Snohomish County Coalition of Food Banks, operating under the church’s non-profit charitable status. In February 2004 we incorporated and were granted our own separate 501(c)(3) status for clarification for our donors. The Board of Directors is made up of committed, qualified individuals who have spent much time working in the food bank from both the church and from the community.

Volunteers of America is the Lead Agency for distribution of food to area food banks including ours. We also receive distributions from Northwest Harvest, a network of food banks and food distribution programs in the State of Washington. These relationships allow us to cooperate with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, distribute government surplus commodities, and to benefit from statewide publicity and mutual support. It avoids duplication of effort and encourages clients to use only one food bank.

Unike many other food banks that have increased in size, our Administrator has done this job as a volunteer for more than 5 years. We really appreciate her devotion to this mission. All other work is also done by volunteers. Many volunteers are not associated with this church and we do no proselytizing of clients or workers. We provide work for students wanting to do community service and also work for court-ordered community service. Some volunteers are former clients returning the generosity with donated work time.

We are not supported by the City of Lynnwood or any other government entity. The church donates the use of the property and contributes to the Operating Fund. All other funding is by generous individuals and businesses going directly to the Food Bank for food for clients.

Lynnwood Food Bank is the only general public distribution center for donated and surplus food in our city.
